About the work

Tapa Nan transports the viewer to a world of childhood and home. Delving deep into his childhood memories, the artist skilfully captures a moment of joy and life's simple pleasures. In this piece, executed in watercolour and ballpoint pen, we see two sun-kissed boys. One fervently tries to cool down the golden-crusted Tapa Nan, whilst the other brings forth a bowl of milky tea. Their mother rolls out the dough, shaping it, attempting to do so before the embers fade. The narrative takes us back to those childhood moments when everything seemed simple and joyous. The household fills with the aroma of freshly baked bread, lovingly prepared by the mother. Central to this artwork is the tapa nan - a traditional Kazakh flatbread. This symbol embodies the taste of a traditional Kazakh dish and holds the artist's profound memories of family and home from his formative years. The Tapa Nan becomes a metaphor for reconnecting with one's roots, sources of joy, and familial values. The painting invites the viewer into a world of childhood recollections and flavours, allowing one to feel and share the ineffable magic of moments that remain eternally etched in our memories.
